چکیده
15 In order to reproduce slow earthquakes with short duration such as very low 16 frequency events (VLFs) migrating along the trench direction as swarms, we apply a 17 3-D subduction plate boundary model based on the slowness law of rate-and 18 2 state-dependent friction, introducing close-set numerous small asperities 1 (rate-weakening regions) at a depth of 30 km under high pore pressure condition, in 2 addition to a large asperity. Our simulation indicates that swarms of slip events occur 3 repeatedly at the small asperities, and these events are similar to the observed slow 4 earthquake group, especially to VLF, on the basis of the relation between characteristic 5 duration and seismic moment. No slip events occur there without the small asperities, 6 which mean that the close-set numerous small asperities may be one of the necessary 7 conditions for generating the short-duration slow earthquakes such as VLFs. In the 8 preseismic stage of the megathrust earthquakes that occur at the large asperity, the 9 swarms of VLFs have higher migration speeds and higher moment release rate as well 10 as shorter recurrence interval. Thus, monitoring the migration of slow earthquakes may 11 be useful in imaging the preseismic slip of megathrust earthquakes.

Compressive sensing of frequency-dependent seismic radiation from subduction zone megathrust ruptures
Megathrust earthquakes rupture a broad zone of the subducting plate interface in both along-strike and along-dip directions. The along-dip rupture characteristics of megathrust events, e.g., their slip and energy radiation distribution, reflect depth-varying frictional properties of the slab interface. Here, we report high-resolution frequency-dependent seismic radiation of the four largest meg...
متن کاملEarthquakes triggered by silent slip events on Kı̄lauea volcano, Hawaii
Slow-slip events, or ‘silent earthquakes’, have recently been discovered in a number of subduction zones including the Nankai trough in Japan, Cascadia, and Guerrero in Mexico, but the depths of these events have been difficult to determine from surface deformation measurements. Although it is assumed that these silent earthquakes are located along the plate megathrust, this has not been proved...
متن کاملSlow-slip evolves into megathrust earthquakes in 2D numerical simulations
[1] Slow slip events (SSE) in many subduction zones incrementally stress the adjacent locked megathrust, suggesting that they could potentially either trigger or evolve into damaging earthquakes. We explore this with 2D quasidynamic simulations with rate-state friction, dilatancy, and coupled 1D pore-fluid and heat transport. Steady-state weakening friction allows transient slip to nucleate, bu...
متن کاملRupture characteristics of major and great (Mw ≥7.0) megathrust earthquakes from 1990 to 2015: 1. Source parameter scaling relationships
Source parameter scaling for major and great thrust-faulting events on circum-Pacific megathrusts is examined using uniformly processed finite-fault inversions and radiated energy estimates for 114 Mw≥ 7.0 earthquakes. To address the limited resolution of source spatial extent and rupture expansion velocity (Vr) from teleseismic observations, the events are subdivided into either group 1 (18 ev...
متن کاملSplay Faults in the Makran Subduction Zone and Changes of their Transferred Coulomb Stress
The Makran subduction zone in northeast and the Sumatra subduction zone (Sunda) in the west have been known as tsunamigenic zones of the Indian Ocean. The 990 km long Makran subduction zone is located offshore of Iran, Pakistan and Oman. Similar to many subduction zones all over the world, the Makran accretionary prism is associated with an imbricate of thrust faults across the zone, which may ...
